Hackensack has made large strides in breaking down barriers and preconceived notions that in other communities have handicapped the relationship between authority and the people.
In the city, the police department has succeeded in dispelling the myths revolving police and has sought to promote a healthy bond between officers and the public.
Through the department and its community policing arm, along with help from the city’s other emergency services and first responders, Hackensack strengthened its close-knit feeling during this month’s National Night Out program. The nationwide initiative, which is in its 25th year, seeks to stomp out crime in neighborhoods by highlighting awareness programs in the areas of drug abuse, violence, gangs and drunken driving.
In Hackensack, residents of all ages gathered by the hundreds at Foschini Park to take part in an evening of information exchange and fun. Safety advice was offered to parents and children, business and homeowners alike. Demonstrations and exhibits by the city and county’s rescue personnel taught community members how to react in specific situations, as well as showing how police, fire and ambulance workers respond to emergencies.
On the fun side, the bicycles were raffled off to children while train rides gave the young ones a unique tour. The Motones performed live music throughout the night, which was capped by the evening fireworks display.
