Mother Nature’s unpredictability, particularly in spring and summertime, can result in a varying array of weather phenomena.

On one end of the spectrum, high skies and warm days usually bring out the best in people, Bergen County residents for that matter, and add to the festivities of Memorial Day, Fourth of July and the various farmers’ markets scattered throughout the seasons. But then there’s the direct converse, the days when nature’s wrath takes its toll on anything in her path.

There are lightning strikes, windstorms and torrential rain. Natural occurrences can create catastrophes – fires, explosions, flooding – especially in densely populated areas such as central Bergen.

When disasters, whether they’re naturally caused or by the hand of humans, strike, people are almost always put into harm’s way. Recent high winds and heavy downpours, for example, created dozens of hazards throughout the city and region.

Representatives from PSE&G last Friday spoke with the children of the Hackensack recreation program about the potential dangers posed by downed power lines and electrical transformers.

Using interactive displays and an open forum, the teachers explained the dangers of electricity and gas power. The children engaged in role-playing and were put into situations and offered advice on the proper reactions.

Also featured at the program, which took place at Foschini Park, was the PSE&G Safety Van. All children received a special comic book and safety literature for their families.
