Man, 18, is held in assault case

An 18-year-old Hackensack man is being held in the Bergen County Jail after police charged him with two counts each of endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated assault.

Derek J. Ortiz, of Anderson Street, was arrested Friday, Aug. 1 following an investigation conducted by the Hackensack Police Department and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Squad.

The investigation stemmed from a case originating at Hackensack University Medical Center on July 31. On that date, hospital personnel treated a 1-month-old female, who had fractures in both legs and her rib cage. HUMC officials contacted the Division of Youth and Family Services, which contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Detectives from the Hackensack Police Department and the BCPO opened an investigation, which led to Ortiz.

Ortiz was arrested and charged. Bail was set at $300,000 with no 10 percent option. He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail.

The 1-month-old infant was being held at HUMC for further observation.
