Students thwart man’s sex ploy

Man, 48, said he worked for ESPN

A Hackensack man posing as an ESPN sports analyst was arrested last Wednesday and accused of endangering the welfare of a child, after he roamed the halls of Indian Hills High School seeking an underage girl for sex.

Hackensack's Joel Brodsky allegedly told four male students he was an ESPN analyst with hopes they would set up a meeting between him and an underage girl.

Overlook Avenue resident Joel Brodsky was being held at the Bergen County Jail late last week on $50,000 bail for his part in last Wednesday’s incident.

According to Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire, 48-year-old Joel Brodsky was accompanied by his 10-year-old son and gained entry into the Oakland high school on March 26. While inside the school, Brodsky encountered four students who were on break from an SAT prep course.

McGuire said Brodsky introduced himself to the students, all males, as ESPN college basketball analyst Mark Adams. Brodsky, police said, was wearing a bogus ESPN identification pass and even carried a New York Giants helmet bearing the signature of Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

Authorities allege that Brodsky used the helmet as a ploy to gain the boys’ trust. While speaking with them, Brodsky reportedly said he could secure college scholarships for them if they were to introduce him to a 16- or 17-year-old girl for sex.

The boys refused to comply with Brodsky, and instead reported the encounter to a teacher. The teacher then notified school officials, who alerted the Oakland Police Department.

Witnesses said Brodsky left the school in a PT Cruiser bearing New York license plates.

McGuire said he learned of the incident at the school through a Reverse 911 call to his home. McGuire is an Oakland resident.

The sheriff’s department and Oakland police used the school’s surveillance tapes to identify Brodsky, who was seen walking through the Indian Hills’ halls shortly after 8 o’clock that night.

Officers then asked Brodsky to meet them at the Hackensack Police Department, where he was arrested.

Brodsky was also charged with criminal trespass and abuse of a child, McGuire said.
